Yakim Boleslav is one of the key characters in my upcoming book. Raised in extreme poverty, he saw firsthand innumerable injustices committed against his people in Eastern Europe. A self-made oligarch, he rules the toughest streets of Solntsevo (a neighborhood in northwest Moscow in the post-Soviet Russia), and justifies his acts through a distorted interpretation of ancient Stoic philosophy. Tomoe Oyuki is his personal bodyguard. They are talking about a large-scale terrorist attack, capable of disrupting the assets, systems, and networks (physical and virtual) of their intended target.

[Wednesday, August 6th, 2031 — Time: 2:44 P.M. — Location: Heavily guarded underground location within the Solntsevo District in Moscow, Russia]

Tomoe: [frustrated] I don’t understand how not taking credit for the attack would advance your cause… It makes little sense. Several terrorist organizations will claim authorship.

Yakim: Countries will blame and attack old enemies. People will be hungry for vengeance and a quick retaliation, and their leaders won’t disappoint them. The key is allowing the worst of the human nature to flourish, and then uncover, disappoint, and turn them paranoid… Destabilizing them, and timing chaos, messing with their minds once they believe “justice” has won and they begin their reconstruction.

Tomoe: But…

Yakim: [interrupting] Tomoe… Have you ever read “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius? [changing the tone of his voice and gesticulating like a stage actor…] “Or is it your reputation that’s bothering you? But look at how soon we’re all forgotten. The abyss of endless time that swallows it all. The emptiness of those applauding hands. The people who praise us; how capricious they are, how arbitrary. And the tiny region it takes place. The whole earth a point in space. Everything is banal in experience, fleeting, sordid in content; in all respects the same today as generations now dead and buried have found it to be.”

[silence…]

Yakim: [calmly] I know, Tomoe. But… It’s unnecessary. Just look at them… [pointing to a complex surveillance system comprising dozens of monitors on a big, long wall] They take for granted a roof, a plate of food. Their biggest fears are losing their communication signals, being late to a banquet, or not knowing what to wear on the weekend. They live a present full of excesses because they know nothing else–or better said, ignore everything else. They change the news stations in disgust when they see abuse in other parts of the world and feel proud of “making a difference” by depositing cents for humanitarian aid at their convenience stores.

[pausing]

We need not give them the face of their true enemy. That would only give them focus. Let idiots claim our attack. It will work well for us. Just create chaos and take them out of their normality, and it won’t be long before everyone behaves like wounded beasts.

Tomoe: People will create their own heroes against their new “evils”, and the purpose of your disruption will get lost in all the noise…

Yakim: [mad, raising the tone of his voice] We must understand the truths of our history! The world has been dominated by powerful and relentless oppressors, which believe in the dissemination of anti-inclusion beliefs and the instigation of the acts of hatred! [almost shouting] Many of the same people who defend freedom are the ones that have worshiped our poverty, inequality, and social exclusion for hundreds of years! More than 60 million of our people are poor and 150 million vulnerable thanks to their avarice… How dare they call us Extreme Nationalists and the heirs of Social Darwinism? The time has come for them to pay for their sins. The time has come for the rise of a new Eastern Europe! This is not about us, Tomoe!

[Tomoe remained silent — feeling embarrassed.]
